Beauty and Marriage

Most times, we base our choice of pals on their attractiveness and not character. My question is does beauty go with marriage? Well, for me, Marriage is beauty itself. It is ordained by God "It is not good that man should be alone..." It is honourable.

I think beauty is alright. At least, God didn't create Eve to be ugly. I believe that if Eve was ugly, Adam would have no choice but to take her as wife cos she was created from his ribs. In essence, If anyone says Eve was ugly, then he/she is automatically saying that Adam was ugly.

I think we should appreciate what we have. We have God first and foremost and he made all things bright and beautiful. Men are very visual. Its easy for a man to get carried away or taken in by a woman's physical appearance.

Beauty without character/virtue is really shallow. I believe those who are experienced enough don't allow themselves to get taken in by attractiveness only. I have met handsome guys that are terrible liars, cheats and can do anything to get money. We also have women who are like that so one really needs to have a discerning ability.

When I was younger, I could trip for a fine guy but when I get to see that he's such a dishonest character et al, I simply got disillusioned/lose interest completely. Now I am "older n wiser", and couldn't care less if a guy was Mr world and had so much money. I look out for his character, the type of person he is in good times and in adversity etc.

Stay tuned.

About me

I am Maria Ifeoma Ogbunando. Some pals call me Marie(cos I read French) and some prefer Ify. I was born in the 70s, in Lagos. I am a first-born, I like things to be in order, to be organized. I have a catholic background though I'm now pentecostal.

My primary school was in Lagos(St. Catherine's Model School, Surulere, Lagos). My high schoool was in Bida, Niger State(Federal Govt. Girls' College, Bida). I had a stint at the University of Jos, Jos, Plateau State, studying Linguistics. I didn't like the course. I then went to The Lagoon Executive Secretarial College, Surulere, Lagos and L'Alliance Francaise, Yaba, Lagos.

I worked as a secretary, a teacher, then went to O.A.U Ife to study French. After graduation(2.1) in Ife, I went into teaching again(Ebenezer College, Alakuko-Agege, and Lagoon Secondary School, Lekki, Lagos). I later got a contract employment with ExxonMobil in 2005 as an administrative asssistant. My contract expired in June 2007.

Presently, I am a trained beauty consultant/make-up artist. I sell cosmetics, perfumes, food supplements/beauty enhancers and weight management products. I also do facials, massage, weight management training and make-up. I hope to get a good location for my shop/beauty clinic soon(God willing).

For the time being, I operate from my house/client's base. I am using this period to engage myself in self-development/improvement programmes. I am currently participating in ICT training for women organized by WTEC.

POLYGAMY – AN OFFENCE?

This is an issue that has generated some heat. Some religions like Islam do not frown at polygamy. For Christians, some say its not biblical, others say its allowed as several great kings in the bible were polygamous and its only for priests/bishops or ministers of God who can not multiply wives.

If priests/ bishops or ministers of God can not multiply wives, it generally means that anyone who aspires to work in the Lord’s vineyard as a priest/bishop/deacon/etc must not for any reason have more than one wife.

Apart from the two religious viewpoints, I know as a woman, that women do not like rivals. The first wife does not want the husband to take another woman as wife and the new wife does not like the old wife and would rather be the only one or the apple of the husband’s eye. I have had one on one discussions with women who found themselves in polygamous marriages. Even those with strict religious upbringing, have to put up with it. Should a 1st wife walk out of marriage because her husband took another wife and it does not go with her Christian beliefs? Is the 2nd/other wife an invader/home-breaker? Is it just that the men are insatiable, greedy or intolerant? My paternal grandfather had 4 wives. That’s not even the irony. He was a catholic as I was made to understand. Is it just too much money and lack of self control?

Who does polygamy really offend? God? The women? Their children? All of the above? Is it a sin against God or a man made sin due to other issues/squabbles in the home? Is it due to our own weaknesses like lust and self-righteousness by condemning others? Is a polygamous man accepted before God even if he’s not a priest/bishop etc?

Can a woman marry a younger man?

This is one of the issues of our time that bugs me a bit. Can a woman marry a younger man? Some say yes, some say no. Some even dictate the number of years difference that is acceptable. For some, she shouldn't be more than 2 years older than the man. I don't know what the hullabaloo is all about. Just like the case in Nigeria of a young male musician who has an older woman as wife. Did he marry her for her wealth and comfort? Did she marry him for "fresh blood" as they say?
I think its really nobody's business. If the couple concerned is not complaining, then why should anyone else complain? Why drink panadol for another person's headache? If the man is not ill at ease with the woman, he's not intimidated and the woman doesn't feel like she's with a sissy or a ninny, if they both feel good and are proud of each other, then why the fuss?
It is only in Nigeria that things like this become an issue. A woman has been conditioned to “marry up” i.e. a richer, older, more educated, more sophisticated man etc. I think women get unrealistic about what they want. We want “Mr. Perfect” and where are you going to find that? Some of us desire what we do not have. You have an older man, good. You have a younger man, good. The important thing is that you are man and wife and not some other thing.
